What Is Jamsu?

Jamsu is a Korean makeup setting technique where you submerge your face in cold water after applying loose powder to set makeup for extreme longevity.

Jamsu (잠수) literally means "diving" or "submerging" in Korean. The technique involves applying a thick layer of loose setting powder over foundation and concealer, then plunging your face into a bowl of cold water for 15–30 seconds. After patting dry, you dust off the excess powder to reveal a matte, poreless finish that lasts significantly longer than conventional setting methods. The cold water helps seal the powder into the foundation and tightens pores temporarily. Jamsu gained global attention when K-beauty influencers demonstrated its effectiveness in hot, humid weather. It works best for oily and combination skin types, though it can be too mattifying for dry skin.

Tips

  • Use ice water for extra pore-tightening effect, but plain cold water works fine.
  • Apply a generous layer of setting powder before submerging—the water needs powder to seal.
  • Pat your face dry gently; don't rub, or you'll disturb the sealed makeup.
  • Skip jamsu on dry skin or in winter—it can be overly mattifying. Stick to setting spray instead.
