What Is Glow Primer?
A glow primer is a luminous base product applied before foundation to add a lit-from-within radiance to the skin, using light-reflecting pigments or finely-milled shimmer particles.
Glow primers sit between skincare and makeup in the application order. They contain light-reflecting particles (usually mica, silica, or crushed pearl) that bounce light off the skin's surface, creating an instant radiance before any other makeup is applied. Unlike highlighter, which is applied to specific zones, glow primer goes all over the face or on areas where you want luminosity. The effect is subtle and diffused — more 'healthy, hydrated skin' than 'shimmery.' The category expanded rapidly in 2024–2026 as dewy and glass-skin trends dominated. Some glow primers are tinted; others are clear or translucent with just the luminous particles. They work best on normal-to-dry skin; oily skin types may find them too shiny.
Tips
- Mix a pump of glow primer with your foundation for an all-over radiance that doesn't look like a separate layer.
- On oily skin, apply glow primer only to the high points of the face (cheekbones, brow bone, nose bridge) and use a mattifying primer on the T-zone.
- Layer under a matte foundation for a 'lit from within' effect that shows through without being overtly glowy.
