What Is Primer?

Primer is a product applied before foundation to smooth skin, fill pores, control oil or add hydration, and help makeup adhere and last longer.

Primer is the bridge between skincare and makeup — a product applied after moisturizer and sunscreen but before foundation. Its job is to create a smooth, even surface that helps makeup adhere better, last longer, and look more polished. There are several types of primers: mattifying primers absorb oil and keep the T-zone shine-free, hydrating primers add moisture for a dewy base, pore-filling primers use silicones to blur visible pores, and color-correcting primers neutralize redness, sallowness, or dullness. The right primer depends on your skin type and makeup goals — oily skin benefits from mattifying formulas, while dry skin performs best with hydrating or illuminating primers. Application is simple: a thin layer across the entire face or targeted to problem areas, allowed to set for 60 seconds before applying base makeup.

Tips

  • Let primer set for a minute before applying foundation.
  • Match primer to your skin: hydrating for dry, mattifying for oily.
