What Is Dot Method?

The dot method is a foundation application technique where you apply dots of product across the face (forehead, cheeks, nose, chin) before blending, ensuring even distribution.

Instead of squeezing foundation onto the back of your hand and applying it in sections, the dot method places small dots of product directly on the face before blending everything at once. This prevents over-concentrating product in one area and ensures each zone gets the right amount of coverage. It's especially useful for beginners and for liquid or cream foundations that can be hard to spread evenly. The technique works with fingers, sponges, and brushes.

Tips

  • Use fewer, smaller dots for light coverage and more dots for medium coverage.
  • Let the dots sit for 10 seconds before blending — this warms the product and helps it meld with skin.
  • Concentrate more dots in the center of the face where you want coverage and fewer toward the hairline and jawline.
