What Is Buffing?

Buffing is a circular blending motion used to work foundation, powder, or cream products into the skin for a smooth, seamless finish.

Buffing is done with a dense, flat-top kabuki brush or a stippling brush, using small circular motions to press product into the skin rather than painting it on top. This technique creates a more airbrushed, natural look than swiping or stippling alone. It works especially well with liquid and cream foundations, mineral powder, and cream blush. Buffing helps product melt into the skin and reduces visible brush strokes, streaks, and uneven patches.

Tips

  • Use a dense, flat-top brush for the best buffing results.
  • Work in small, tight circles rather than large sweeping motions.
  • Start from the center of the face and buff outward toward the hairline and jaw.
