What Is Buildable?

Buildable means a product can be applied in layers to increase coverage or intensity without looking cakey.

Buildable describes makeup products that can be layered from sheer to full coverage without becoming cakey, patchy, or heavy. A truly buildable formula allows you to apply one thin layer for a natural look and add additional layers where needed — over blemishes, under eyes, or on uneven areas — while maintaining a smooth, natural finish. Not all products marketed as buildable actually are: a good buildable formula blends seamlessly with each layer and doesn't change texture or finish when stacked. Testing buildability is simple — apply one layer, let it set, then apply another. If the second layer blends in without lifting the first, the product is genuinely buildable.

Tips

  • Start with a small amount and build in thin layers. Blend between layers.
