What Is Blending?

Blending is softening and merging makeup edges so there are no harsh lines—essential for eyeshadow, contour, and blush.

Blending is the technique of diffusing the edges of makeup products — especially eyeshadow and contour — so that colors transition smoothly with no visible lines. It's arguably the most important skill in makeup application. Good blending uses a soft, fluffy brush with circular or windshield-wiper motions in the crease and transition areas. The key principles: use a clean blending brush (product-free) for the final blend, work in light layers (it's easier to blend thin applications than thick ones), and always blend before the product sets. For eyeshadow, start with the lightest color and build darker shades gradually, blending between each layer. For cream contour and blush, a damp beauty sponge creates the most seamless blend. The most common blending mistake is using too much product — heavy application creates muddy colors that are difficult to blend cleanly.

Tips

  • Use a clean brush to blend without adding more product.
  • Blend in small circles and switch to a lighter hand as you go.
