Mary Kay

Mid-Range

Pink Cadillacs and independent beauty consultants.

United States·Founded 1963·by Mary Kay Ash

Mary Kay was founded in 1963 in Dallas by Mary Kay Ash, who started the company with her life savings after resigning from a sales career where she had repeatedly watched men she trained get promoted above her. She built the business around independent beauty consultants and an incentive structure — including the famous pink Cadillac awarded to top sellers — designed to give women a route to income and recognition they were being denied elsewhere.

The product range spans TimeWise skincare, foundations, lipsticks and the long-running Mary Kay At Play colour line, sold almost entirely through consultants rather than retail. Alongside Avon, it defined the direct-sales model in beauty, and its consultant network remains one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Brand Philosophy

Give women the opportunity they are being refused elsewhere — build a company where recognition and income depend on what someone sells, not who they are.
