What Is Smudge Liner?

A smudge liner is an eyeliner technique where a pencil or kohl liner is applied and then intentionally blurred or smudged along the lash line for a soft, lived-in, smokey effect.

Smudge liner creates a softer, more diffused look than a crisp gel or liquid line. The technique involves drawing a line close to the lashes with a soft pencil or kohl liner, then using a small smudge brush, angled brush, or even a fingertip to blend and diffuse the edges. The result is a subtle smokiness that adds depth and definition without the precision (or difficulty) of a perfect winged liner. Smudge liner works on every eye shape and skill level — it's inherently forgiving because imperfection is the point. Dark brown and charcoal shades give a softer look than jet black, while jewel tones like emerald or navy can add dimension. The 90s grunge revival and everyday smokey looks both rely heavily on this technique.

Tips

  • Use a pencil or kohl liner — gel and liquid liners dry too fast to smudge properly.
  • Smudge within 10–15 seconds of application before the liner sets.
  • For a cleaner version, smudge only the upper lash line and keep the lower lash line crisp.
