What Is Tightlining?

Tightlining is applying liner (usually pencil or gel) to the upper waterline—the inner rim of the upper lash line—to make lashes look fuller and define the eye without a visible line.

Tightlining adds depth and fullness to the lash line without the look of a harsh line on the lid. It's often used with smokey eyes or natural looks. Care should be taken to use products safe for the waterline and to avoid tugging. It can make eyes look more defined and lashes thicker.

Tips

  • Use a waterproof or waterline-safe pencil to prevent smudging.
  • Look up slightly and gently pull the lid to access the waterline.
  • Black or dark brown works for definition; nude can open up the eye.
