What Is Waterline?
The waterline is the inner rim of the eye—the moist strip of skin between the lashes and the eye. Liner or pencil can be applied there for definition.
The waterline is the thin strip of skin between the eye and the lash line, visible when you pull down the lower lid. Applying liner to the waterline (also called tightlining the lower lid) can make eyes appear smaller and more defined when using dark colors, or larger and more awake when using nude or white pencils. The waterline is a mucous membrane, so products applied here need to be ophthalmologist-tested and safe for sensitive areas. Waterproof formulas last longer because the waterline produces moisture that breaks down regular pencils within hours. Kohl pencils and waterproof eye pencils are the most common choices for waterline application.
Tips
- Use a waterproof or waterline-safe pencil. Nude on the lower waterline can open up the eye.
