What Is Sandbagging?

Sandbagging is a makeup technique where you apply loose setting powder heavily under the eyes and around the nose before applying base products to those areas — preventing concealer and foundation from creasing.

Sandbagging works as a preventive barrier. By laying down a thick layer of loose powder first, then applying concealer or foundation on top, the powder absorbs moisture and oil before creasing can start. It's similar to baking, but the powder goes down first instead of on top. The technique is particularly useful for people with oily under-eyes or deep smile lines where concealer tends to settle into creases within an hour. After the base products are blended, the excess powder is brushed away, leaving a smooth, crease-resistant finish.

Tips

  • Use a finely milled translucent powder — chunky powders will look textured under the concealer.
  • Apply the powder with a fluffy brush, then pat concealer on top with a damp sponge.
  • Let everything set for 3–5 minutes before dusting off excess powder.
  • Best for long-wear situations — skip for everyday natural looks as it can look heavy.
