What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a skin-prep technique that uses a small, sharp blade to gently remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz from the face, creating a smoother canvas for makeup.
Dermaplaning has become a popular pre-makeup ritual because it creates an exceptionally smooth surface for foundation and base products. By removing the fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) and the top layer of dead skin cells, products glide on more evenly and skin looks more refined. The technique can be done professionally by an esthetician or at home with single-blade dermaplaning tools. It's different from shaving—the blade is held at a 45-degree angle and used in short, gentle strokes. Results typically last 3–4 weeks. It's generally safe for most skin types but should be avoided on active acne, rosacea flare-ups, or irritated skin.
Tips
- Always dermaplane on clean, dry skin—never wet.
- Use short, light strokes at a 45-degree angle, going downward with the hair growth.
- Apply SPF after dermaplaning—freshly exfoliated skin is more sun-sensitive.
