What Is Double Cleanse?

Double cleansing is a two-step face-washing method: first an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup and sunscreen, then a water-based cleanser to clean the skin itself.

The double-cleanse method originated in Korean and Japanese skincare routines and has become a global standard for anyone who wears makeup or sunscreen daily. The principle is simple: oil dissolves oil. An oil-based or balm cleanser in the first step breaks down makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum that water-based cleansers can't fully remove on their own. The second step—a gentle water-based cleanser—removes any remaining residue and cleans the skin itself. Double cleansing ensures that pores are truly clean, which helps prevent breakouts, allows skincare products to penetrate better, and keeps skin healthier long-term.

Tips

  • Apply the oil cleanser to dry skin, massage for 60 seconds, then rinse. Follow with a foaming or gel cleanser on damp skin.
  • Micellar water counts as a first cleanse in a pinch, but an oil or balm cleanser is more thorough.
  • You only need to double cleanse at night—morning washing with just water or a gentle cleanser is fine.
  • If your skin feels tight after double cleansing, your second cleanser may be too harsh. Switch to a gentler formula.
