What Is Skin Prep?
The skincare steps taken immediately before applying makeup—cleansing, moisturizing, and priming—to create a smooth, hydrated canvas for better product adhesion and finish.
Skin prep is the difference between makeup that looks good for an hour and makeup that looks good all day. Professional makeup artists spend as much time on skin prep as on the actual makeup application because a well-prepped canvas makes every product perform better. The core steps are cleansing (to remove oil and residue), moisturizing (to hydrate and smooth), and priming (to extend wear and blur texture). The specific products you use depend on your skin type—oily skin benefits from lightweight gel moisturizers and mattifying primers, while dry skin needs richer hydration and dewy primers.
Tips
- Wait 60 seconds between moisturizer and primer so each layer absorbs—rushing causes pilling.
- If your foundation pills over your skincare, it's usually a silicone-water conflict. Match your moisturizer and primer bases (both water-based or both silicone-based).
- On days when you don't wear foundation, good skin prep alone with SPF can give you a polished, healthy look.
