What Is Cold Cranking?
Cold cranking is a makeup prep technique where you briefly apply a cold tool (ice roller, frozen spoon, or cold jade roller) to the face before makeup application to tighten pores, reduce puffiness, and create a smoother canvas.
Cold cranking combines the Korean skincare practice of skin icing with makeup prep. The cold constricts blood vessels temporarily, reducing redness and puffiness — especially around the eyes and jawline. Pores appear smaller because the cold causes temporary skin tightening. The result is a smoother, firmer base for makeup application. The effect is temporary (30-60 minutes) but that's enough for makeup to set on a tighter canvas. It's especially effective before events or photos when you want the most refined skin texture. Use after moisturizer, before primer. Don't apply ice directly to bare skin — always use a cloth barrier or a proper ice roller.
Tips
- Roll in upward and outward strokes for 1-2 minutes. Focus on undereyes, jaw, and forehead.
- Always apply over moisturizer or serum — never on bare dry skin.
- The pore-minimizing effect lasts about an hour — time your makeup application accordingly.
