What Is Gua Sha?
Gua sha is a flat, contoured stone tool (usually jade or rose quartz) used in sweeping facial massage strokes to promote lymphatic drainage, reduce puffiness, and sculpt facial contours.
Originating from traditional Chinese medicine where it was used on the body for pain relief, gua sha has been adapted as a facial beauty tool. The flat stone is held at a shallow angle and swept across the face in upward and outward strokes, following lymphatic pathways. Regular use can temporarily reduce puffiness (especially in the morning), improve circulation for a natural glow, and help skincare products absorb. While claims about permanent face-sculpting are exaggerated, the de-puffing and circulation benefits are real and visible. The tool is typically used after applying facial oil or serum to provide slip and prevent dragging. Many makeup artists now incorporate gua sha into pre-makeup prep routines because the de-puffed, sculpted canvas makes foundation and contour look more natural.
Tips
- Always use a facial oil or serum for slip—never drag the stone on dry skin.
- Hold the tool nearly flat against the skin (about 15 degrees) and sweep upward with medium pressure.
- Focus on the jawline, cheekbones, and under-eye area for the most visible de-puffing results.
