What Is Skin Icing?
Skin icing is the practice of applying ice or a cold tool to the face to reduce puffiness, tighten pores temporarily, and create a smoother canvas for makeup application.
Skin icing works by constricting blood vessels (vasoconstriction), which temporarily reduces swelling, redness, and pore appearance. The technique has been used in Korean skincare routines for years and has gained mainstream popularity as a pre-makeup prep step. Methods include rubbing an ice cube wrapped in cloth across the face, using ice rollers, or using reusable cryo globes. The cold also helps reduce under-eye puffiness and can calm inflamed acne. Effects are temporary—lasting 1–3 hours—but the improved canvas makes makeup apply more smoothly and helps foundation sit better on the skin. Never apply ice directly to skin for extended periods as it can cause ice burns.
Tips
- Wrap the ice cube in a thin cloth or use a dedicated ice roller—never hold bare ice on skin for more than a few seconds.
- Focus on puffy areas: under-eyes, cheeks, and jawline. Sweep upward for a lifting effect.
- Do skin icing before moisturizer and primer for the best makeup-prep results.
