What Is Blush Topping?

Blush topping is the technique of applying blush over eyeshadow on the lids and across the nose for a cohesive, flushed, sun-kissed look.

Blush topping takes blush beyond the cheeks. After completing your eye look, you apply a sweep of blush across the eyelids, bridge of the nose, and sometimes the chin and forehead. This ties the face together with a unified color and creates the effect of a natural, all-over flush—like you have just come inside from cold air or finished laughing. The technique gained popularity through Korean and Japanese beauty where placing blush under and around the eyes has long been standard. Western beauty adopted it as part of the sunburn blush and igari blush trends. Cream and liquid blushes work best because they layer over other products without looking chalky.

Tips

  • Use the same cream or liquid blush on cheeks, eyelids, and nose bridge for a cohesive flush.
  • Apply with a light hand on the lids—one tiny dot blended out is enough.
  • This technique works best with sheer, buildable blush formulas. Anything too pigmented is hard to control across multiple areas.
