Subtl Beauty was founded in 2019 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by Rachel Reid, who built the brand around a single problem: most makeup is too bulky to actually carry around. After Reid started filling empty contact lens cases with mini portions of her favorite products, she realized there was no purpose-built solution on the market — so she developed the Stak, a stackable, customizable compact that snaps together to deliver a whole-face makeup routine in a single tube the size of a lipstick.
The Stak 2.0 launched with elevated packaging and prestige-level formulations covering complexion, blush, bronzer, highlighter, brow, and lip. Subtl Beauty is direct-to-consumer first, with a refill model that has earned it a sustainable-beauty following alongside the on-the-go traveler audience. The brand has been featured by Today Show, Forbes, and Glamour, and has grown into one of the more interesting indie cases of customizable, single-SKU makeup design in the US market.
