Kylie Cosmetics was founded by Kylie Jenner in November 2015, launching as Lip Kit by Kylie with three matte liquid lipstick-and-liner duos funded by $250,000 of her modeling earnings and manufactured by Seed Beauty. All 15,000 first-run units sold out in under a minute and crashed the site — the launch is the case study most often cited for how a celebrity with a large social following can compress years of brand-building into a single weekend. The brand was renamed Kylie Cosmetics in 2016 as Jenner expanded into eyeshadow palettes, glosses, and complexion.

Coty acquired a 51% controlling stake in 2020 for $600 million, taking the brand into Ulta in 2020 and giving it the global distribution muscle to expand into Boots, Douglas, and other international retail. Kylie Cosmetics turned 10 in October 2025 with the King Kylie collection, a nostalgic revival of the original matte Lip Kit shades and packaging.
