Kanebo
Luxury“Japanese prestige, skin-first color.”
By Viktoria @vioda.makeup · Published · Updated
Kanebo is a luxury makeup brand from Japan, founded in 1937. It's best known for its Prestige J-beauty makeup, Skin-first 'second skin' complexion and Black-and-white KANEBO prestige line.
Kanebo is one of Japan's heritage prestige houses, with roots in an 1887 textile company that moved into cosmetics in 1937. Its modern flagship — the minimalist black-and-white "KANEBO" prestige line — regularly tops Japanese Best Cosme rankings (VOCE, MAQUIA, @cosme) for base makeup and complexion, built around a skin-first philosophy where foundation, powder, and skincare are designed to work as one luminous second skin.
Now part of the Kao Group, Kanebo is enjoying a wave of renewed Western attention as skin-first J-beauty gains ground with editors in the US and Australia. Its makeup range spans award-winning liquid foundations, the glow-forward Rouge Star Vibrant lipsticks, eyeshadow, and precise Double Liner eyeliners, and it releases seasonal color collections that get treated as editorial events. It sits in the same prestige J-beauty conversation as SUQQU, Shu Uemura, and Clé de Peau Beauté.
