What Is Skin Cycling?

Skin cycling is a dermatologist-developed skincare routine that rotates active ingredients on a nightly schedule—typically exfoliation, retinoid, then recovery nights—to maximize results while minimizing irritation.

Coined by dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe, skin cycling became one of the most viral skincare trends on TikTok. The standard cycle is four nights: Night 1 is chemical exfoliation (AHA/BHA), Night 2 is retinoid (retinol, tretinoin, or adapalene), and Nights 3–4 are recovery nights with hydrating, barrier-repairing products only. The concept addresses the common mistake of using too many active ingredients every night, which leads to irritation, sensitivity, and a damaged skin barrier. For makeup wearers, skin cycling matters because healthy, well-maintained skin is the foundation of every look—makeup applies better, looks smoother, and lasts longer on skin that isn't irritated or flaking from overuse of actives.

Tips

  • On recovery nights, focus on hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides—your skin is rebuilding its barrier.
  • Start with a simple 4-night cycle and extend recovery nights to 3 if your skin feels sensitive.
  • Apply makeup the morning after recovery nights for the best base—your skin will be most hydrated and calm.
