What Is Pearlescent?
Pearlescent describes a soft, luminous finish in makeup that reflects light with a subtle, pearl-like sheen—less intense than shimmer or glitter, more radiant than matte.
Pearlescent finishes sit between matte and shimmer on the intensity scale. They contain finely milled light-reflecting particles that give a soft glow without visible sparkle or chunky glitter. The effect is sophisticated and often described as "lit-from-within" or "angelic." Pearlescent finishes are common in highlighters, eyeshadows, lip products, and primers. They're ideal for adding subtle luminosity to everyday looks and work well on mature skin because they enhance without emphasizing texture the way larger shimmer particles can.
Tips
- Apply pearlescent products to the high points of the face: cheekbones, brow bone, inner corners, and cupid's bow.
- Use a fan brush for the most diffused, subtle application.
- Pearlescent finishes photograph beautifully—they catch light without causing flashback.
