What Is Micellar Water?

A gentle, no-rinse cleansing water containing micelles—tiny oil molecules suspended in soft water—that attract and lift away makeup, dirt, and oil from the skin.

Micellar water originated in France, where hard tap water made traditional cleansing harsh on the skin. The micelles act like magnets for impurities: when you sweep a soaked cotton pad across your face, the oil molecules attract and dissolve makeup and sebum without stripping the skin. It's popular as a first cleanse in a double-cleansing routine, as a morning cleanser, or as a quick makeup remover when you can't do a full wash. Most micellar waters work on all skin types, including sensitive skin, because they don't contain harsh surfactants or require rinsing.

Tips

  • Soak the cotton pad fully—a dry pad with a little micellar water drags on the skin and doesn't remove makeup effectively.
  • Hold the soaked pad on stubborn eye makeup for 10 seconds before wiping to dissolve waterproof products.
  • If you have oily or acne-prone skin, follow micellar water with a gentle foaming cleanser to ensure all residue is removed.
