What Is Lip Threading?
An ombre lip technique where thin threads of lip liner are drawn from the outer edge of the lips inward and then blended, creating a precise, controlled gradient.
Lip threading is a precision approach to the ombre lip. Instead of broadly lining and smudging, you draw fine parallel lines (threads) of lip liner from the lip edge toward the center, then blend them with a finger or brush. This gives you more control over where the color concentration sits, resulting in a polished gradient that looks intentional rather than smeared. The technique gained popularity on social media as creators demonstrated how the thread-like strokes blend into a smoother, more even ombre. It works especially well with creamy, soft lip liner formulas that glide and blend without tugging.
Tips
- Draw thin, feathery strokes from the lip edge inward. Do not press hard or the lines will be too thick to blend.
- Use a lip liner one to two shades deeper than your lip color for a natural ombre, or go darker for drama.
- Blend with a clean fingertip in small circular motions. A lip brush works too but fingers give more control over pressure.
