What Is Lip Neutralizing?
Lip neutralizing is the technique of applying concealer, foundation, or a neutral lip liner over the natural lip color before applying lipstick to create a blank canvas.
This technique cancels out the natural pigment of your lips so that the lipstick shade you apply on top reads exactly as it appears in the tube. It's especially useful for bold or unconventional lip colors (nudes, pastels, oranges) that can be altered by your natural lip pigment. Drag performers pioneered this technique for the most accurate color payoff. For everyday use, a thin layer of concealer blotted and set with powder, or a nude lip liner close to your skin tone, is sufficient. It also helps lipstick last longer by creating a dry, adhesive base.
Tips
- Use a thin layer — thick concealer on lips feels uncomfortable and causes lipstick to slip.
- Blot the concealer and set lightly with translucent powder before applying color.
- This technique is essential for nude lipsticks that would otherwise look washed-out on pigmented lips.
