What Is Floating Liner?

Floating liner is an eyeliner technique where color is drawn along the crease or above the lash line rather than on the lash line itself, creating a graphic, suspended effect.

Instead of tracing the traditional lash line, floating liner places a bold line of color in the crease, the socket, or anywhere above the lid to create a disconnected, editorial look. The technique became a runway staple and later a social-media trend when creators started experimenting with bright colors, geometric shapes, and negative space. Floating liner is one of the easiest ways to turn a simple eye look into something artistic, and it photographs extremely well because the line isn't hidden by lashes. It's most striking with felt-tip liquid liners or gel pots and a fine angled brush.

Tips

  • Map your crease line with eyes open—looking into a mirror straight on—so the line sits exactly where it's visible.
  • Use small, connected strokes rather than one continuous pull for more control over the curve.
  • Try a bold color (cobalt, emerald, tangerine) against a bare lid for maximum graphic impact.
