What Is Color Theory?

Color theory in makeup is the understanding of how colors relate to each other on the color wheel—used for correcting, complementing, and creating harmonious looks.

Color theory helps with everything from color correcting (orange cancels dark circles on deeper skin, peach on medium, lavender on sallow tones) to choosing eyeshadow that makes your eye color pop (purple shades complement brown eyes, copper complements blue). Understanding warm vs. cool, complementary vs. analogous, and how undertones interact with product shades makes makeup choices more intentional and results more flattering. It's the difference between randomly picking shades and understanding why certain combinations work.

Tips

  • Complementary colors (opposite on the wheel) create contrast: purple shadow makes brown eyes pop.
  • Analogous colors (next to each other) create harmony: warm browns and golds together feel cohesive.
  • For color correcting, use the opposite color on the wheel to cancel discoloration.
