What Is Transition Shade?

A transition shade is a matte eyeshadow (usually a mid-tone taupe, brown, or peach) applied in the crease to blend darker lid shades into the skin and create depth.

The transition shade acts as a bridge between your skin tone and the lid or outer V color. It's typically applied first in the crease with a fluffy brush and helps subsequent shades blend seamlessly. It's a staple in almost every eyeshadow look, from natural to smokey.

Tips

  • Choose a shade close to your skin tone or slightly darker—taupe and soft brown work for many.
  • Use a fluffy blending brush and build slowly.
  • Apply before lid color so everything blends together.
