What Is Base Cocktail?
Base cocktail is the practice of mixing multiple base products (foundation, skin tint, moisturizer, primer, glow drops) together before applying to create a custom base that suits your exact coverage, finish, and hydration needs.
Rather than layering products on top of each other (which can cause pilling and cakiness), base cocktailing mixes them in the palm or on the back of the hand first. Common combinations: foundation + moisturizer for sheer coverage; skin tint + glow drops for a luminous light base; foundation + primer for smoother application; concealer + eye cream for a hydrating undereye. The technique became widely popular when beauty creators showed how mixing a full-coverage foundation with moisturizer creates a skin-tint effect — giving people a use for foundations that are too heavy for everyday but too expensive to throw away. Base cocktailing saves money because it extends the use of products and creates customizable results without buying additional products.
Tips
- Mix on the back of your hand — body heat warms the products and helps them blend together seamlessly.
- Check formula compatibility: mix water-based with water-based, silicone with silicone.
- Start with more of the lighter product and add foundation slowly — you can always add more coverage.
