What Is Velvet Lip?

A velvet lip is a matte-adjacent lip finish that has a soft, blurred, slightly velvety texture—less flat than true matte but not glossy or shiny.

The velvet finish sits between matte and satin on the spectrum. It has the opaque color payoff of matte but with a softer, more comfortable feel and a subtle sheen when light hits at certain angles. Velvet lip products don't dry down completely flat, making them more forgiving on dry or textured lips. The look has roots in Korean beauty, where "velvet tints" became popular for their blurred, airbrushed appearance. Velvet finishes work well for both everyday wear and photography because they read as polished without being high-maintenance. Many modern liquid lipsticks now advertise a velvet finish as an alternative to the ultra-dry matte formulas that dominated the mid-2010s.

Tips

  • Apply velvet lipstick with a finger-dab technique for a blurred, lived-in look.
  • Velvet finishes layer well—build color gradually for a more intense but still soft appearance.
  • Prep lips with a thin layer of lip balm blotted off before applying for the smoothest velvet texture.
