What Is Soft Matte?

Soft matte is a finish that eliminates shine without looking completely flat or powdery—it sits between a true matte and a satin, giving skin a velvety, skin-like texture.

True matte products can look chalky or heavy, especially in photos or under bright light. Soft matte formulas address this by maintaining a non-shiny appearance while retaining some of the depth and dimension that makes skin look natural. The finish is often described as 'velvet,' 'suede,' or 'skin matte.' It's a popular finish for foundations and lip products because it photographs well, is forgiving of texture, and doesn't accentuate dry patches the way a harsh matte can. Many modern liquid lipsticks and foundations are formulated with a soft matte finish specifically to bridge the gap between the comfort of satin and the no-transfer longevity of matte.

Tips

  • Set a satin foundation with light translucent powder to achieve a soft matte finish.
  • A soft matte lip looks more expensive than a flat matte—look for 'velvet' in product descriptions.
  • Avoid over-powdering; one light layer is enough for soft matte without looking chalky.
