What Is Satin Finish?
A satin finish falls between matte and dewy—it has a soft, natural sheen without visible shimmer or shine. It's the most versatile and skin-like finish in makeup.
Satin finish is often described as 'your skin but better' because it mimics the way healthy, hydrated skin naturally reflects light. It's neither flat and powdery like matte, nor wet-looking like dewy. Products with a satin finish include foundations, lipsticks, eyeshadows, and blushes. The finish is universally flattering across skin types—it gives dry skin a subtle glow without emphasizing texture, and it doesn't look overly shiny on oily skin. Many popular products are satin by default: Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk lipstick, MAC Satin lipstick formula, and most skin tints have a natural satin finish.
Tips
- Satin foundations are the safest choice if you're unsure of your preferred finish.
- Set a satin foundation lightly with translucent powder only in the T-zone to maintain the natural sheen.
- Layer a satin lipstick with lip liner for both color and longevity.
