What Is Powder Puff Method?

The powder puff method is a setting technique where loose or pressed powder is pressed into the skin using a velour powder puff rather than a brush, creating a smooth, poreless, soft-focus finish.

This technique went viral on TikTok as an alternative to brush or sponge powder application. By pressing (not swiping) powder into the skin with a dense velour puff, the product fills in pores and texture rather than sitting on top. The result is a soft-matte, airbrushed finish that photographs beautifully. It's different from baking—you press the powder in immediately rather than letting it sit. The technique works best with finely milled translucent powder and is particularly effective on the under-eye area, forehead, and around the nose where pores tend to be most visible.

Tips

  • Press the puff into powder, tap off excess, then press (don't swipe) onto the skin in a rolling motion.
  • Use finely milled translucent powder for the best soft-focus effect.
  • Focus on the T-zone and under-eyes where pores and creasing are most visible.
  • This technique sets makeup more thoroughly than a brush, making it ideal for long-wear days.
