What Is Nose Contour?
Nose contour is a technique that uses light and shadow to visually reshape the nose — making it appear slimmer, shorter, straighter, or more defined.
Nose contouring involves drawing thin lines of cool-toned contour shade along the sides of the nose, then adding highlighter down the bridge where you want the eye to focus. The shadow creates the illusion of narrowness, while the highlight draws attention to the center. Different placements achieve different effects: stopping the contour before the tip shortens the nose; extending it to the nostrils lengthens it; narrowing the lines at the bridge and widening at the tip creates a more uniform width. The key to natural-looking nose contour is blending. Harsh lines are immediately obvious and look costume-like. Use a small, dense brush and blend outward in short strokes. The shade should be cool and ashy — never warm or orange — to mimic a realistic shadow.
Tips
- Use a cool, ashy shade — warm bronzer as nose contour looks orange and unnatural.
- A thin, flat brush or a small angled brush gives the most precise lines.
- Always blend outward with a clean brush. If you can see distinct lines, blend more.
- Less is more — heavy nose contour is the fastest way to make makeup look overdone.
