What Is Negative Space Liner?

Negative space liner is a graphic eyeliner technique where sections of the liner are intentionally left empty (showing skin) to create geometric or cut-out patterns on the lid.

Unlike traditional liner that creates a continuous line, negative space liner uses the absence of product as part of the design. Common patterns include outlined shapes that aren't filled in, floating liner with a gap between the lash line and the line, double wings with space between them, and geometric cut-outs. The technique rose to prominence through editorial makeup and social media, and is used for creative, artistic, and avant-garde looks. It requires a steady hand and precise application, often with a fine-tip felt pen or angled brush with gel liner.

Tips

  • Use a fine-tip felt pen liner for the most control.
  • Map out the design with a light pencil before committing with liquid liner.
  • Clean up edges with micellar water on a tiny brush for crisp lines.
