What Is Makeup Sandwich Technique?

The makeup sandwich technique is a layering method where you alternate between cream and powder products — typically cream, then powder, then cream again — to build long-lasting, crease-proof makeup.

The 'sandwich' metaphor describes the layering: a cream product (the bottom bread), a powder layer (the filling), and another cream product on top (the top bread). The most common application is for under-eye concealer: apply cream concealer, set with translucent powder, then add another thin layer of concealer or a cream highlight on top. The powder layer locks the first cream layer in place, and the second cream layer adds a skin-like finish over the potentially dry-looking powder. This technique works anywhere you want maximum longevity without a cakey, powdery finish — under eyes, blush, bronzer, or eyeshadow. It's especially effective for oily skin or hot weather when products tend to break down faster.

Tips

  • The most effective sandwich: cream concealer → translucent powder → cream highlighter or a thin second layer of concealer.
  • Let each layer set for 15–20 seconds before adding the next. Rushing creates pilling.
  • This technique is most valuable for under-eyes, where creasing is the biggest problem. You don't need to sandwich your entire face.
