What Is Lip Staining?

Lip staining is a technique that deposits sheer, long-lasting color on the lips by applying and blotting away pigmented product — leaving a natural, just-bitten tint that lasts for hours without transfer.

Lip staining creates a 'my lips but better' effect by tinting the lips with color that looks like it comes from within. The technique can use dedicated lip stains (like Benefit Benetint or the Peripera Ink Velvet), or be achieved with regular lipstick by applying a layer, blotting with tissue, then repeating 2–3 times. Each layer deposits more pigment into the lip texture while removing the surface product that would transfer. The result is a stain that lasts through eating and drinking and looks natural even as it fades. Korean lip tints popularized this approach globally, and the 'popsicle lip' or 'bitten lip' look is the most visible application of the technique.

Tips

  • For a DIY stain with regular lipstick: apply, blot, reapply, blot. Three rounds builds a long-lasting tint.
  • Water-based stains (like Benetint) set fast — work quickly and blend within 10 seconds of application.
  • Exfoliate lips before staining for even color. Dry patches grab more pigment and create uneven results.
