What Is Lip Scrub?
A lip scrub is an exfoliating product specifically formulated to remove dead skin from the lips, leaving them smooth and prepped for lip color application.
Lip scrubs typically use sugar or fine exfoliating particles suspended in a balm or oil base. You massage a small amount onto the lips in circular motions for 30–60 seconds, then wipe or rinse off. The result is smoother, softer lips that hold lip color more evenly — especially important for matte or long-wear lipsticks that tend to cling to dry patches and flakes. Using a lip scrub once or twice a week (or before a special event) is enough for most people. Over-exfoliating can irritate the delicate lip skin, so skip the scrub if your lips are cracked or bleeding. Many people make DIY lip scrubs with sugar and honey or coconut oil, which works just as well as store-bought versions.
Tips
- Scrub lips gently before applying matte lipstick — the smooth surface helps the color glide on evenly and last longer.
- Follow with a hydrating lip balm and let it absorb for a few minutes before applying lip color.
- DIY version: mix sugar with honey or coconut oil for an effective homemade lip scrub.
