What Is Lip Mask?
A lip mask is a thick, intensive treatment applied to the lips—usually overnight—to deeply hydrate, repair, and soften dry or chapped lips.
Lip masks are thicker and more concentrated than regular lip balm. They create an occlusive barrier that locks in moisture and active ingredients while you sleep. Most lip masks contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, lanolin, vitamin E, and peptides. The Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask popularized the category globally, but drugstore options from CeraVe, Aquaphor, and others deliver similar results. Lip masks are especially valuable before wearing matte or long-wear lip products—applying one the night before gives you a smooth, hydrated canvas. They're also used as a prep step in many makeup routines.
Tips
- Apply a thick layer to clean, dry lips before bed. The occlusive barrier locks in moisture overnight.
- Use a lip mask the night before wearing matte lipstick for a smoother application.
- Gently exfoliate lips with a soft toothbrush before applying the mask for better absorption.
- In a pinch, a thick layer of Aquaphor or Vaseline works as a budget lip mask.
