A makeup lip flip is an overlining technique that creates the illusion of a fuller upper lip by drawing slightly above the natural lip line at the cupid's bow.
The makeup lip flip (distinct from the cosmetic Botox lip flip procedure) is a strategic overlining technique that targets the cupid's bow and center of the upper lip specifically. Instead of overlining the entire lip, which can look obvious, the lip flip extends the line just at the two peaks of the cupid's bow and the center of the upper lip, creating a subtle outward "flip" that makes the upper lip appear plumper and more defined. The technique became a viral TikTok trend for its ability to add volume to thin upper lips without looking overdone. Combined with concealer to clean up the edges and a lip product that matches the liner, the illusion is remarkably convincing.
Tips
- Only overline at the cupid's bow peaks and center of the upper lip—don't overline the entire lip or the corners.
- Go no more than 1mm outside your natural lip line; subtlety is everything with this technique.
- Use concealer or a small concealer brush to clean up the area just above the overlined portion for a crisp, natural look.
