What Is Lip Cocktailing?

Lip cocktailing is the technique of mixing two or more lip products together—on the lips or on the back of the hand—to create a custom shade, finish, or effect.

Instead of searching for the one perfect lipstick shade, lip cocktailing lets you create it. Common combinations include mixing a matte lipstick with a gloss for a satin finish, layering two shades to create a custom color, or topping a lip stain with a balm for comfortable wear with staying power. The technique also includes adding a dot of concealer to the center of the lip for a gradient effect, or mixing highlighter into a lip product for a reflective sheen. Makeup artists have used this approach for decades to match lip colors to editorial mood boards or client requests. It's become popular on social media as people realize that owning 3–4 versatile lip products is more useful than 15 single-use shades.

Tips

  • Mix on the back of your hand first to see the resulting color before applying to lips.
  • Matte + gloss = satin. Start with the matte as a base and add gloss to the center for dimension.
  • Use a lip liner in a neutral shade as the base layer—it extends the wear of any cocktail combination.
