What Is Kabuki Brush?

A kabuki brush is a short-handled, densely packed makeup brush originally used in Japanese theater, now popular for applying powder, bronzer, blush, and foundation.

The kabuki brush gets its name from Japanese kabuki theater, where performers used dense brushes to apply heavy stage makeup. In modern makeup, kabuki brushes are characterized by their dense, rounded bristle heads and short handles. They come in flat-top and rounded varieties. Flat-top kabuki brushes are excellent for buffing in liquid or cream foundation for an airbrushed finish. Rounded kabuki brushes work well for dusting powder, bronzer, and setting powder across the face. Their density means they pick up and distribute product evenly, making them a staple in both professional and everyday makeup kits.

Tips

  • Use a flat-top kabuki for liquid foundation—buff in circular motions for an airbrushed finish.
  • Clean kabuki brushes weekly since their density traps more product and bacteria than thinner brushes.
  • Use light pressure with a kabuki for powder—pressing too hard can disturb the base underneath.
