What Is Doe Eyes?

Doe eyes is a makeup technique that makes the eyes appear larger, rounder, and more open — mimicking the wide, innocent look of a doe's eyes using strategic liner, lash, and shadow placement.

The doe eye technique contrasts with angular eye trends like fox eyes or siren eyes. Instead of lifting and elongating, doe eyes focus on rounding and opening. The technique typically involves: applying light or white shimmer to the inner corner and center of the lid; placing eyeliner along the outer third only (avoiding the inner corner, which closes the eye); curling lashes aggressively and applying mascara heavily to the center lashes (not outer); and using a light shade on the waterline to make eyes appear larger. Some versions include subtle lower lash mascara or a thin brown liner on the lower outer third. The overall effect is soft, youthful, and wide-eyed. The trend resurged in 2025–2026 alongside 'innocent' and 'romantic' aesthetics.

Tips

  • Focus mascara on the center lashes — this rounds the eye. Outer lashes elongate, which works against the doe-eye effect.
  • Use a nude or white liner on the waterline to open the eye, rather than black which makes it appear smaller.
  • Keep liner thin and only on the outer third of the upper lid. Heavy liner all the way across closes the eye down.
