What Is Color-Depositing?

Color-depositing products temporarily add or enhance color to hair, brows, or skin through pigment that sits on the surface rather than penetrating or staining permanently.

In makeup, color-depositing refers to products that layer pigment onto the skin's surface rather than being absorbed—like color-depositing lip balms that react with skin pH, or tinted brow gels that add temporary color to brow hairs. In haircare, color-depositing shampoos and conditioners gradually build color to enhance, refresh, or shift existing hair color. The "depositing" mechanism means the product is non-permanent: it washes out, fades naturally, or wears off over the course of the day. This makes color-depositing products low-commitment options for people who want to experiment with color without a semi-permanent or permanent change. pH-reactive lip products (like Dior Lip Glow) are a popular example—they deposit a tint that adjusts to individual lip chemistry.

Tips

  • Color-depositing lip products layer well—apply multiple coats for a deeper tint.
  • For brows, a color-depositing gel adds dimension without the commitment of tinting or dyeing.
  • pH-reactive products will look different on everyone; swatch on your wrist before committing to a shade.
