What Is Brow Tinting?

Brow tinting is a semi-permanent coloring treatment that dyes brow hairs to appear fuller, darker, and more defined without daily pencil or powder application.

Brow tinting uses a vegetable-based or semi-permanent dye applied to the brow hairs (and sometimes the skin underneath) to enhance their color and visibility. The treatment typically lasts three to six weeks and is popular for people with light, sparse, or gray brows who want a low-maintenance alternative to filling in brows daily. Professional tinting takes about fifteen minutes; at-home kits are also available but require careful application to avoid staining skin. The treatment is different from brow lamination (which changes the direction and texture of hairs) and microblading (which tattoos individual hair strokes into the skin).

Tips

  • Choose a tint one shade lighter than your desired result—it always develops darker than expected.
  • Apply petroleum jelly around the brow area before tinting to prevent skin staining.
  • Avoid getting brows wet for 24 hours after tinting for the longest-lasting results.
