What Is Cloud Skin?
Cloud skin is a base makeup finish that's ultra-soft, diffused, and matte without being flat — like your face is wrapped in a soft cloud. It has no visible shimmer, no shine, but retains dimension and doesn't look powdery.
Cloud skin emerged as a 2025-2026 trend in response to the extreme dewy and glass-skin trends. Where glass skin aims for maximum reflectivity, cloud skin aims for maximum softness — the finish is blurred, velvety, and completely non-reflective, but still looks like real skin rather than a mask. The technique involves using velvet or mousse-textured products, setting strategically (not heavily), and using skin-like primers that blur without adding glow. The result should look like you applied nothing — just naturally smooth, even, pore-diffused skin. It's often achieved with cushion compacts, powder foundations, or skin tints set with finely-milled powder. The key differentiator from matte skin is dimension: matte can look flat, but cloud skin retains the natural lights and shadows of the face.
Tips
- Use a damp beauty sponge to apply foundation in pressing motions — this creates the soft, diffused finish without streaks.
- Set only the T-zone with powder and leave the perimeter of your face un-set for a more natural cloud effect.
