What Is Brow Wax?
Brow wax is a clear or tinted styling product formulated with wax as the primary holding agent to sculpt, shape, and set eyebrow hairs in place throughout the day.
Unlike brow gels (which use film-forming polymers in a liquid base), brow waxes coat individual hairs with a waxy substance that molds them into position and holds them there. The result is typically stronger hold with a more defined, sculpted effect—popular for the brushed-up, laminated brow look. Clear brow waxes like NYX Control Freak and the cult-favorite e.l.f. Clear Brow Gel use this formula. Tinted brow waxes add color and volume simultaneously. The wax formula also tends to be conditioning, making it suitable for dry or brittle brow hairs. Brow wax is a key tool for achieving feathered brows and soap brow effects without actual soap.
Tips
- Apply brow wax over brow pencil or powder to lock in color and shape.
- For the 'wet brow' trend, apply generously and brush straight upward.
- A tiny amount goes a long way—start with less and build up for the hold you need.
