What Is Blotting?

The technique of pressing blotting papers or powder against the skin to absorb excess oil without disturbing the makeup underneath.

Blotting is one of the simplest and most effective midday touch-up methods, especially for oily and combination skin types. Blotting papers are thin, absorbent sheets that soak up sebum on contact, while translucent powder can be lightly pressed into shiny areas for a longer-lasting matte effect. The key is pressing—not rubbing—so you lift oil without smearing foundation, concealer, or blush.

Tips

  • Press and hold the blotting paper for 2–3 seconds—don't drag or wipe, or you'll move your makeup around.
  • Blot before reapplying powder; layering powder over oil creates a cakey buildup.
  • In a pinch, a clean toilet seat cover or tissue works as an emergency blotting paper—seriously, it's the same material.
